AN INSIGHT INTO BLOSSOMS OF THE SAVANNAH ( H.R. OLE KULET)
The novel Blossoms of The Savannah is a captivating story of two sisters, Taiyo and Resian who are in their youth ages and have their personal ambitions to achieve regardless of the archaic Nasila culture.
Published in 2008, it presents Resian as an epitome of a woman who challenges the societal view of the destiny of a girl. She is determined to continue with her studies and achieve a better future for herself  in defiance of the arranged marriage and FGM that the community sets out for her as her path to being a Maasai woman.
The author explores several social concerns like FGM, early marriages, love, education, polygamy, male chauvinism, hedonism, work, suffering, death and immorality.
Ole Kulet uses several languages to bring out various effects in the text. The vast use of the Maa language brings out the setting of the story and differentiates the learnt and elite fellows from the others brought up and confined in Nasila. He also uses swahili words though in rare cases.
Several styles in the story bring out different moods and effects. The author uses narration, vivid description, humor, contrast and symbolism among others. It is through narration that the origin of FGM becomes known to the reader.
Ole Kaelo, the girls' father falls into the trap of Oloisudori Lonkiyaa and lands her daughters in great trouble which they have to majorly struggle to get out of.
Foil characters who help the girls reach their dream include Emakererei, Nabaru, Joseph Parmuat and Olarinkoi though he contributes negatively.
The title "Blossoms of the Savannah" signifies the new shoots of the new way of life among the Maasai who inhabit the Savannah. To blossom means to flower. Resian and Taiyo are used to show a new beginning in the novel.
